Lovin’ The Gardai? A reply to Niall Harbison by Eoin Ó Faogáin

The Bogman’s Cannon

Niall Harbison. Founder of Lovin’Dublin and its longstanding Director of Bad Opinions. Purveyor extraordinaire of a Dublin divided based on its appetite for gentrification.

Ostensibly, the topic of Harbo’s latest opinion piece appeared somewhat agreeable. Its title? ‘Why the Guards should get whatever pay rise they ask for’. At face value, the argument is that they should be supported in their support of better pay and conditions. And I’d largely agree with that.

I agree because it’s consistent with my feeling that all ordinary workers have been pushed to their limit over the last decade as expectations upon them have soared, concurrent with plummeting pay, conditions and resources. LUAS workers, Dublin Bus workers, teachers, SNAs, nurses, junior doctors as a small sample of those affected.

There are two problems with this piece, however.

Firstly, the overwhelming inconsistency from its author. This is a man who has consistently utilised both his…

A violent criminal has been cleared of assaulting a prison officer when he was searched for weapons.

Leon Wright (28) of Donore Avenue in Dublin 8 remained handcuffed and flanked by five prison staff wearing riot gear for his district court trial on Wednesday.

Wright, who claimed he was beaten by prison officers, was supported in court by Independent TDs Mick Wallace and Clare Daly who took notes of the proceedings from the public gallery.

After the defence raised questions over the credibility of prosecution witnesses and evidence, Judge Alan Mitchell said that having viewed the CCTV evidence in particular he was dismissing the case.

He also said that he was going to direct that the Court Service would prepare a copy of the digital audio recording of the hearing and that it would be offered to Inspector of Prisons Judge Michael Reilly in the event he would like to “take further action”.

No political cover-up in Fr Molloy case – Leyden

Fr. Niall Molloy - Unsolved Murder 1985

No political cover-up in Fr Molloy case – Leyden

– Lenihan’s were not present at party

Senior Fianna Fail politicians were not present at an after-wedding party at Kilcoursey House on the night that Fr Niall Molloy was killed in July 1985, Senator Terry Leyden has said.

Senator Leyden was speaking at a public meeting in Castlecoote last week, where renewed calls were made for an independent commission of investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fr Molloy’s death.

The Castlecoote-based senator and parishioner dismissed ‘allegations’ that the late Brian Lenihan, then a senior party figure, and his wife Ann, had been present at Kilcoursey House on the night of Fr Molloy’s death.

“Minister Brian Lenihan and his wife Ann were present at the wedding; that is true. … They left on Saturday evening at six or seven o’clock and I checked this today with Ann…

A lucky escape for a priceless archive.

Come Here To Me!

In January 2012, we had the privilege of sitting down and chatting with Terry Fagan, the driving force behind the North Inner-City Folklore Project. The Project has been responsible for a number of oral history publications, most recently a study of Dublin tenement life. The project have also put up several plaques in the north inner-city in recent years, marking the valuable contribution of the area to the struggle for independence.

Quite frankly, what Terry and the NICFP have gathered over time is one of the most important collections of artifacts of working class life and struggle on the island of Ireland.  For several years now, the material has been kept in a vacant flat at St. Mary’s Mansions on Railway Street. In recent days, the collection had a very lucky escape:

Terry notes that:

Irish Leaders Castigated As Greatest Traitors Of All Time

Fools Crow's Blog

by Gabriel Donohoe

The Irish Government has recently passed the harshest budget in the history of the State with further austerity promised for the next three years and perhaps for decades. Prime Minister Brian Cowen and Finance Minister Brian Lenihan have steered Ireland from the booming prosperity of a Celtic Tiger to a ruined shell of a country where unemployment, poverty, emigration, and despair are proceeding to destroy a once proud, industrious people.

Cowen and Lenihan also bear the ignominy of having brought in the International Monetary Fund who, along with EU banksters, are now dictating Irish fiscal policy. The IMF has long had a vulturish reputation for plundering weaker countries by stripping the flesh of its victims down to the bare bones. This repulsive scavenger is well known for promoting austerity and misery, grabbing national assets for its bankster and corporate friends, and leaving the skeleton of a country’s…
