Department of Taoiseach – Statement by the Taoiseach on the Dáil Motion on the report of the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Diocese of Cloyne, in Dáil Éireann,: Because for the first time in Ireland, a report into child sexual-abuse exposes an attempt by the Holy See, to frustrate an Inquiry in a sovereign, democratic republic…as little as three years ago, not three decades ago?

New evidence that Irish children were murdered « The Ragged Wagon

New evidence that Irish children were murdered « The Ragged Wagon: The cemeteries have been renovated, mostly as ultra-twee “memorial gardens”. Angels and cartoon dogs, bears and cuddly toys now adorn them. There are however, very few names of the children or mothers who died in these places. Nuns however (or ‘sisters’, given that in correct usage, ‘nun’ refers to a female religious, who leads a contemplative life) are all given their own plots with their names inscribed. They, at least, have a proper Christian burial.?

Denham blends commitment to reform of judiciary with liberal edge of dissent – The Irish Times – Wed, Jul 20, 2011

Denham blends commitment to reform of judiciary with liberal edge of dissent – The Irish Times – Wed, Jul 20, 2011: Shortly afterwards the judiciary was convulsed by the Sheedy affair, which led to the resignation of a Supreme Court and a Circuit Court judge, and it appeared a system for regulating judicial conduct was imminent. Over a decade later nothing has been done, despite a further report from a committee chaired by then chief justice Ronan Keane and including Mrs Justice Denham. It recommended the setting up of a judicial council on a statutory basis, providing for the representation, education and training of judges as well as a disciplinary mechanism. This has still to be legislated for, though the last government published the heads of a Judicial Council Bill last year and it features in the programme for government.?GARDA COMPLAINTS BOARD CHAIRMAN SUSAN DENEHAM,FRANK SMYTH,CHIEF SUPT.JAMES P O SULLIVAN,ABUSE OF AUTHORITY AGAINST PROFOUNDLY DEAF PERSONS,STRIP SEARCHING.DECISION?

Carlin v DPP: Prosecutorial Discretion and the Decision (not) to Prosecute « Human Rights in Ireland

Carlin v DPP: Prosecutorial Discretion and the Decision (not) to Prosecute « Human Rights in Ireland: Carlin raises a number of interesting questions that intersect with broader issues of justice in the criminal process, not least whether the review and subsequent U-turn by the DPP is indicative of a prosecution (and therefore, a State) in tune with the concerns of victims and the public.?

ENCOURAGECHANGE.: Press releases 2001 – FR. PETER MCVERRY SJ: In pursuit of his public crusade he has marshalled an array of finely honed skills – the skill to lobby, to organise, to cajole politicians, to embarrass politicians, to master the well timed sound bite, the skill to gently subvert the conscience management manoeuvres of the more privileged. His exercise of these skills has inevitably lead to him being cast in the role of dissident outsider, happily a role he is content to occupy for the foreseeable future.”?

Mass Imprisonment and the Life Course: Race and Class Inequality in U.S. Incarceration

Mass Imprisonment and the Life Course: Race and Class Inequality in U.S. Incarceration: Although growth in the U.S. prison population over the past twenty-five years has been widely discussed, few studies examine changes in inequality in imprisonment. We study penal inequality by estimating lifetime risks of imprisonment for black and white men at different levels of education. Combining administrative, survey, and census data, we estimate that among men born between 1965 and 1969, 3 percent of whites and 20 percent of blacks had served time in prison by their early thirties. The risks of incarceration are highly stratified by education. Among black men born during this period, 30 percent of those without college education and nearly 60 percent of high school dropouts went to prison by 1999. The novel pervasiveness of imprisonment indicates the emergence of incarceration as a new stage in the life course of young low-skill black men.?THE REASONS PROJECT?
